What are HDD Enclosures? |
External HDD (hard disk drive) Enclosures are portable caddies for 2.5" or 3.5" IDE hard drives. They
allow you to use a normal, inexpensive hard disk as portable storage
and backup, easily connecting 40GB, 80GB, 120GB and larger IDE storage to your computer via USB.
However, these HDD external enclosures
are more than that! They can also function as high capacity stand-alone media players.
You can backup all your music (MP3) and videos (MPG, MP4 etc) to the
external hdd case and then, away from your PC, listen to your MP3s and
watch your videos directly from the HDD media player.
Connecting the IDE Enclosure to PC
- Any normal 3.5 inch IDE
hard drive or 2.5 inch (notebook size) IDE hard disk can be installed
inside the external enclosure device. Connection is simple and, once
inside, the hard drive is protected so it's a fully portable storage
- When connected to PC, the
hard drive will appear as another drive letter, which you can copy files
to and from in the same way you use a normal hard drive. No drivers
are required in Windows XP and Windows 2000.
- Once connected to PC you
can copy any data you want to the portable USB HDD.
Playing Media From The HDD Enclosure
- You can connect the harddisk
box to the TV to watch your videos.
- If you want to view a slideshow
of your photographs, the USB external enclosure will detect the JPG
(etc) files and show this on your TV too.
- You can wire your headphones
or stereo system directly into the external drive enclosure to listen
to your music. It's a huge capacity hard disk mp3 player!
More External HDD Enclosure Features
- OTG = "on the go"
- it means you can use the hdd media player as a USB host when connecting
to another USB storage device such as an MP3 player or digital camera,
and copy / exchange files on the fly.
- SD / MMC / CF- if the harddisk
player has a flash memory card slot, you can insert your Secure Digital
(SD) Card, Multimedia Card (MMC), or Compact Flash (CF) card to copy
data to and from the cards, e.g. to back up digital cameras or share
music with your friends who use these flash media to store files.
- DivX - a type of high quality
codec for compressing video. If you regularly back up your DVD collection
into DivX format, you can watch the videos when you connect your DivX
player HDD enclosure to your TV.
- Check the descriptions for
the different models of HDD media player to check out the input and
output ports, including S-Video out, RCA-video-out, RCA-audio-out etc.
- If the portable usb hdd
enclosure features an ethernet port, it can be used as a portable removable
network hard drive.
